High Beams Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

Your low beams are fine but flip on the high beams and nothing happens. This is a specific failure with a short list of likely causes. Most of them you can check yourself in under 20 minutes.

Why High and Low Beams Fail Separately

High beams and low beams are two completely separate circuits. They have their own fuse, their own relay, and on most vehicles with dual-filament bulbs, two different filaments inside the same bulb. When one circuit dies and the other keeps working, that actually helps you narrow down the problem fast.

The signal starts at the multifunction switch on your steering column. When you push the stalk forward or pull it toward you, that switch sends power through the high beam relay and out to the bulbs. If anything in that chain breaks, the high beams go dark while the low beam circuit keeps running normally.

Vehicles with HID projectors or LED assemblies work differently. They often use a separate shutter or solenoid to switch between high and low, or they have completely separate light sources. If your vehicle is HID or LED, the diagnosis path is a little different, but the starting points (fuse, relay, switch) are the same.

Step 1: Check the Bulb

If only one high beam is out, start with the bulb. Most halogen headlights use a dual-filament bulb with one filament for low beam and one for high. The high beam filament can burn out while the low beam filament keeps going. It happens.

Pull the bulb and hold it up to a light. Look at both filaments inside. A broken filament is easy to spot. You can also check with a multimeter set to continuity. Put the probes on the two terminals that correspond to the high beam filament and see if you get a reading. No continuity means the filament is gone.

If both high beams are out, a double bulb failure at the same time is unlikely. Skip ahead to the fuse.

Common high beam bulbs include 9005, H9, and H7, but your vehicle may use a different number. Check your owner's manual or look up your year and model on a parts site to find the right one.

Step 2: Check the Fuse

A blown fuse is the most common reason both high beams go out at once. Every vehicle has a dedicated fuse for the high beam circuit. Find it in your owner's manual fuse box diagram. It's usually labeled "HIGH BEAM," "HI BEAM," or "HEADLAMP HI." On some vehicles it's in the engine bay fuse box rather than the interior one.

Pull the fuse and look at it. If the metal strip inside is broken, replace it with a new fuse of exactly the same amperage. Don't go higher. Don't use a different style fuse just because it fits the slot.

If the new fuse blows as soon as you activate the high beams, there's a short somewhere in the circuit. Don't keep replacing fuses. You need to find the short first. Check the wiring harness near the headlights for any spots where insulation has worn through and the bare wire is touching metal.

Step 3: Check the High Beam Relay

If the bulbs are good and the fuse is good, check the relay. The high beam relay sits in the fuse box and acts as a remote switch. When you activate high beams, the multifunction switch sends a small signal to the relay, which closes a contact and sends power to the bulbs. When the relay fails, the circuit stays open and the high beams don't work.

The easiest way to test the relay is to swap it with an identical relay from the same fuse box. Most fuse boxes have multiple relays that look exactly alike. Find one that matches yours in shape and labeling, swap them, and test the high beams. If they work now, you found the problem.

A new relay usually costs $5 to $15 at any auto parts store. Bring the old one with you to make sure you get an exact match.

Step 4: Check the Multifunction Switch

If you've ruled out the bulb, fuse, and relay, the next suspect is the multifunction switch. This is the stalk on your steering column that you use to activate high beams, turn signals, and often wipers. The high beam contacts inside this switch can wear out or corrode over time.

A clue that the switch is the problem: flash-to-pass works but holding the high beams on doesn't, or vice versa. Flash-to-pass and latched-on use slightly different contact paths inside the switch. When one works and the other doesn't, the switch is failing.

Another test: use a multimeter to check whether the switch is actually sending a signal when you activate high beams. If the switch output shows nothing when you push the stalk, the switch is the problem. If it does show output, the problem is downstream in the relay or wiring.

Multifunction switch replacement is a moderate DIY job. You typically need to remove the steering column covers to access it. The part itself usually runs $40 to $150 depending on the vehicle.

HID and LED Headlights: What's Different

On HID bi-xenon systems, the high beam function is controlled by a solenoid-operated shutter inside the projector. When you activate high beams, the shutter opens to let more light through. If that solenoid fails, your high beams won't activate even though the HID bulb itself is fine. This is a housing-level problem, not a bulb or fuse issue.

On LED headlights, some vehicles use a single LED array with the high beam controlled by activating additional LEDs. Others use a separate LED projector for high beam. If the high beam LEDs stop working, the fix could be a failed LED module, a wiring issue to that module, or a control module problem.

For HID and LED systems, start with the fuse and relay as always. If those are fine, the diagnosis gets more specific to your exact system. A dealer or shop with the right scan tool can read module-level fault codes to narrow it down quickly.

When the Assembly Needs to Be Replaced

Most of the time, fixing a dead high beam doesn't require replacing the headlight assembly. But there are situations where it does.

  • The HID bi-xenon solenoid or shutter inside the projector has failed
  • The LED high beam module is burned out in a sealed LED assembly
  • The wiring harness inside the housing is burned or melted from a previous electrical problem
  • The headlight housing itself is cracked or damaged
  • Water got in and corroded the bulb socket or internal wiring beyond repair

Aftermarket headlight assemblies run $50 to $300 for most vehicles. OEM from the dealer goes higher. If your vehicle has complex LED or adaptive headlights, OEM is usually the safer choice to ensure the high beam pattern and control systems work correctly.
