Broken Light Fix.

How to Replace a Headlight (Step by Step)

This is one of the easiest car repairs you can do. Most people knock it out in under an hour, even with zero experience.

What You'll Need

  • New headlight assembly (make sure it matches your exact year, make, and model)
  • 10mm socket and ratchet
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Clean cloth or gloves
  • 15 to 40 minutes of your time

Step by Step Instructions

1

Pop the Hood

Open the hood and locate your headlight assembly. On most vehicles, you can see the back of the headlight housing from the engine bay. If you can't, your vehicle might require front bumper removal (check YouTube for your specific model).

2

Disconnect the Wiring

Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the headlight. There's usually a tab or clip you press to release it. Don't force it. If it's stuck, wiggle gently while pressing the release tab.

3

Remove the Mounting Bolts

Most headlights are held in by 2 to 4 bolts or screws. Remove them and keep track of which bolt goes where. Some vehicles use push-pin retainers instead of bolts. Take a photo before you start so you remember the layout.

4

Pull Out the Old Assembly

Carefully slide the old headlight assembly out. It might feel snug because of alignment tabs. Pull straight out, don't twist. If it won't budge, check for any hidden clips or screws you missed.

5

Install the New Assembly

Slide the new assembly into position. Make sure the alignment tabs seat properly. Hand-tighten the bolts first to make sure everything lines up before you crank them down.

6

Reconnect and Test

Plug the electrical connector back in. Turn on your headlights and check low beam, high beam, and turn signal. Make sure everything works before you close the hood.

Tips for a Clean Install

  • Don't touch the bulb glass. If your new assembly comes with bulbs installed, leave them alone. Oil from your fingers can cause hot spots and premature failure.
  • Check the seal. Make sure the rubber gasket or seal is in place. Water inside a headlight housing causes fogging and corrosion.
  • Replace both sides if possible. If one failed, the other is probably on borrowed time. Plus, mismatched headlights look odd.
  • Watch a video for your specific car. The general process is the same, but every vehicle has quirks. A 5-minute YouTube video for your exact model saves a lot of guessing.
