Hazard Lights Not Working? Here's What to Check
Your hazard lights use the same bulbs as your turn signals but go through a completely different switch and relay. That's why one can fail while the other works fine. Here's how to figure out which part gave out and what to do about it.
How Hazard Lights Are Different from Turn Signals
Your turn signals and hazard lights both flash the same amber bulbs at the front and rear corners of your vehicle. But the similarity stops there. They run on separate circuits with separate controls.
Turn signals are controlled by the stalk on your steering column. Push it left or right and it activates one side through the turn signal relay. Hazards are controlled by the button on your dashboard, usually the triangle button. That sends power through the hazard relay, which flashes all four corners at once.
On many vehicles, the turn signal relay and hazard relay are separate components. On others, they're combined into one unit with different internal circuits. Either way, a failure in the hazard circuit doesn't necessarily affect the turn signals, and vice versa. That's why your blinkers can work perfectly while your hazards are completely dead.
The Most Common Causes
Blown Hazard Fuse
This is always the first thing to check. Most vehicles have a dedicated hazard fuse, usually labeled HAZARD or HAZ in the fuse box. It's the fastest fix if it's blown. Open the fuse box, find the hazard fuse using the diagram on the cover, pull it out, and hold it up to the light. If the metal strip inside is broken, replace it with a fuse of the same amperage and test. Done in two minutes.
Failed Hazard Switch
The hazard switch takes a beating. People press it in a hurry, often when stressed. Over time the internal contacts wear out. The switch can fail completely, or it can work intermittently, cutting out when the button gets warm or when it's pressed at a slightly different angle. If the fuse is good and the relay checks out, the switch is likely the problem. On most vehicles it's a straightforward replacement that pops out of the dashboard.
Bad Flasher Relay
The flasher relay is what makes the lights actually blink instead of staying on steady. When it fails, you might get nothing at all, or you might get a steady light with no flashing. Relays are cheap, usually $5 to $20. The location varies a lot by vehicle. It might be in the fuse box, on the fuse box panel under the dash, or plugged directly into the hazard switch assembly. Check your owner's manual or look up your specific vehicle to find where yours is.
Burned Out Bulbs
Because hazard lights flash all four corners at once, you can usually spot a dead bulb just by looking. Turn the hazards on and walk around the car. Whichever corner isn't flashing has a bad bulb or a bad socket. The slow or uneven blink you might notice from the driver's seat is the relay reacting to the changed electrical load with one bulb missing from the circuit.
Corroded Socket or Ground Connection
Turn signal and hazard light sockets corrode over time, especially in climates with road salt. A corroded socket creates high resistance or an intermittent connection, which shows up as a dim flash, a slow blink, or no flash at all on that corner. The ground wire for each light connects to the body near the housing. A loose or corroded ground creates similar symptoms. Pull the bulb, look at the socket contacts, and clean or replace anything that looks green or black.
How to Diagnose: Step by Step

Check the hazard fuse first
Open the fuse box and find the hazard fuse. Pull it out and look at the wire inside. If it's broken, replace it with a fuse of the same amperage and test the hazards. If the fuse was good, move to the next step.

Test your turn signals
If turn signals work normally on both sides, your bulbs and sockets are fine. That narrows the problem to the hazard switch, the hazard relay, or the hazard fuse. If your turn signals also have problems, you might have a bulb issue affecting both circuits.

Walk around and check all four corners
If the hazards come on at all, turn them on and walk around the car. Check each corner. Any corner that's not flashing or is noticeably dim has a bulb or socket problem. Replace the bulb and clean the socket contacts if they look corroded.

Replace the flasher relay
If the fuse is good and the bulbs are fine but the hazards still don't flash, replace the relay. Find the location in your owner's manual. It usually pulls straight out and the new one clicks in. Relays are cheap enough that if you're not sure, just replace it and test. If the hazards work after, you found the problem.

Test or replace the hazard switch
If the relay and fuse are both good but hazards still don't work, the switch itself has failed. On most vehicles, the hazard switch pops out of the dash with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver. Check the wiring connector for corrosion or a loose connection first. If the connector looks fine, replace the switch. It's usually a plug-and-play part with no programming needed.

Most hazard light problems are easy fixes. Fuses, relays, and bulbs are all cheap and accessible. If you've replaced the fuse, relay, and checked all the bulbs and the hazards still don't work, the problem is probably electrical, either a wiring fault or a failed body control module (BCM).
On modern vehicles, the BCM controls the hazard light circuit digitally. A BCM fault can disable hazards completely while every other component tests fine. Diagnosing a BCM issue requires a scan tool that can read BCM codes, not just engine codes. That's a shop tool.
If the hazards work intermittently, that usually points to the switch or a connector with a bad connection. Shops can reproduce intermittent faults by flexing connectors and watching for the fault to trigger. If you can't reproduce it yourself, a shop can chase it down with the right tools and wiring diagrams.
